Magnolia Regional Health Center Hosts First Community Flu Coalition Meeting Bringing Together State, Regional and Local Agencies to Plan for Flu Pandemic

Magnolia Regional Health Center hosted the first Community Flu Coalition meeting for representatives from state, regional and local agencies on Friday, October 9, 2009. The Coalition, which includes City of Corinth Mayor Jerry Latch, Alcorn County Board of Supervisors President Gary Ross, representatives from the Corinth city and Alcorn County school districts, Mississippi Department of Health, Mississippi Emergency Management Agency, Magnolia Regional Health Center, Alcorn County Emergency Management Agency, local law enforcement and more, will be responsible for combining efforts to ensure that in the event of a flu pandemic, resources and information will be readily available to the citizens of Corinth and Alcorn County.

City of Corinth Mayor Jerry Latch stated, “I am proud to see our hospital and the leaders of our community coming together to prepare for a potential flu pandemic.”

The Community Flu Coalition meetings offer a venue for agencies at all levels to communicate their anticipated needs and resources, should Corinth and Alcorn County experience an H1N1 flu pandemic. It is the intent of the group to identify these needs in advance of a pandemic. In addition, the group will spearhead several community education initiatives targeted at educating parents of school-age children, high risk groups and the general public about vaccinations and general healthful precautions.

“Magnolia Regional Health Center is closely monitoring the progression of H1N1 influenza in our community and preparing for the possibility that we will be providing care for more people infected with this strain of flu,” stated MRHC Chief of Organizational Excellence Angela Jackson. “We are excited to participate in the Coalition, whose focus is to educate, plan, prevent and protect the citizens of our community and the surrounding communities that we serve.”
