Magnolia Regional Health Center Foundation Recieves Grant from Komen North Mississippi Race for the Cure

TUPELO, Miss. – Seventy-five percent of the net proceeds from the 2009 Komen North Mississippi Race for the Cure, $160,000, will provide medially under-served women in this region much needed access to health care and breast cancer treatment, while the remaining 25 percent will be used by Susan G. Komen for the Cure to fund national breast cancer research.
The grants were awarded at a reception held March 12 at the North Mississippi Medical Center Women’s Hospital.
“Area not-for-profit organizations were asked to submit proposals that respond to the threat of breast cancer, particularly programs that will be used to provide screening mammograms and educational programs,” said Teri Browder-Radcliffe, affiliate coordinator for the Komen North Mississippi Affiliate. “We were particularly interested in programs that would provide screenings and education for women who are under-insured, uninsured or fall between the cracks in health coverage.”
The grant committee awarded $160,000 in grants to area not-for-profit organizations and funded the following requests:
  • Baptist Memorial Healthcare Foundation was awarded $48,000 to provide mammograms at the four Baptist hospitals in north Mississippi (Union County, Booneville, Columbus and Oxford).
  • North Mississippi Medical Center Breast Care Center received $25,500 to provide mammograms for medically under-served women, education and support programs throughout the Komen North Mississippi service area.
  • Sisters Network was the recipient of a $24,000 grant to provide mammograms for the medically under served, education and support programs for African-American women in the Komen North Mississippi service area.

  • NMMC-West Point was awarded $15,000 for mammograms and education.
  • Columbus-Lowndes Free Medical Clinic was the recipient of a $10,000 grant to provide needy women in Lowndes County access to screening mammograms.
