Longtime physician and Magnolia Regional Health Center board member, Dr. Tommy Alexander, recently resigned from his board position.

Although his time of serving on the board, which he served on for 27 years, has come to a close, his leadership and commitment to MRHC and the community will not be forgotten.

“Words can’t express how grateful we are for Dr. Alexander’s service and vision for the past 27 years while serving in his role,” said Ronny Humes, CEO at Magnolia Regional Health Center. “He has played a significant role in all of the positive changes that have taken place over the past three decades and has served this hospital and community extremely well during his tenure.”

Alexander practiced medicine, specializing in obstetrics and gynecology, for nearly 50 years. Joining the medical staff at MRHC in 1971, he provided care for numerous patients and delivered countless babies in the region.

During his board tenure, the hospital saw exponential growth. His guidance, along with the guidance of other key individuals along the way, helped to steer MRHC into the direction of continuous growth.

“Dr. Alexander helped to navigate us into the right direction,” Humes added. “Obviously, healthcare can be a challenging environment at times, but with the forward-thinking and insight from people like Dr. Alexander, our organization has been positioned to see future success within the industry.”

Under Dr. Alexander and the board’s guidance, MRHC was able to construct an addition in 2007, which included three new patient floors, a new surgical intensive care unit, new private short stay surgery rooms, new private pre and post heart catheterization rooms, new operating rooms, new cardiac rehabilitation area and six new medical office suites. Additionally, the Magnolia Heart and Vascular Center was opened the same year, offering cardiac intervention and open heart surgery.

In 2013, the board approved the construction of the new 53,000 square feet addition that included a new front entrance, state-of-the-art radiology department, first-class emergency department and new cardiology and lab areas.

In 2017, MRHC added the service of inpatient nephrology and a new dialysis treatment center, allowing thousands of dialysis treatments that would normally be done outside of the region to now be done at MRHC. A state-of-the-art behavioral health unit was also added, allowing for both general and geropsych patients to be treated in separate and specialized units.

“Very few people know what they want to do in life from an early age,” said Larry James, MRHC board member and long-time friend of Dr. Alexander. “As a boy in high school, he always said he wanted to be a doctor. I never doubted he would reach his goal of becoming one and a good one at that.”

James added, “It’s been a real pleasure serving alongside him in a board capacity and working together to ensure MRHC and our community is set to be successful years from now.”
